Tritons Open Conference Season With Series Win Over San Diego State
After seemingly having their games cancelled for a second straight weekend, the San Diego State Aztecs were able to host the Tritons at their home field of Herbert Hoover High School. After a Saturday defeat, UCSD swept the Sunday doubleheader to get the conference schedule off to a winning start.
Game 1
The weekend’s nine-inning contest was staged on Saturday, where junior Ray Young took the ball for the Tritons. Walks hurt him early as the Aztecs put up two runs in the first. UCSD would get one back in the fourth on a single from senior Seamus Beyerle. But San Diego State would break the game open with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two in the seventh. The Tritons couldn’t get the offense going, only being able to push a run across in the bottom of the ninth while trailing big.

Game 2
UCSD arrived Sunday morning with a new mindset after some postgame words from senior Ben Rogness on Saturday. The starting pitcher for the Tritons, junior Ray Estrada, worked out of a jam in the first without allowing a run before Seamus Beyerle drove in a run in the bottom of the inning. They would send eleven men to the plate in a five run second with RBIs from Beyerle and juniors Hunter Woodruff and Jacob Springman (2). The Aztecs would claw back a pair of runs in the third, but the Springman would drive in his third run of the game in the bottom of the inning. RBI singles from Beyerle and Woodruff would extend the lead further. Estrada ended up going 5.1 innings of three run ball before senior David Gomez finished the last 1.2 innings without allowing a run. Junior Miguel Moreno scored three runs during the contest.

Game 3
With the rubber match set, the Tritons sent freshman Austin Uresti to the mound. He would exit after a six pitch first with a bruised foot he sustained from a comebacker on his first pitch. Miguel Moreno scored his fifth run of the weekend in the first to give UCSD the early lead. In the third, junior Matthew Hosino ran into trouble allowing four runs. UCSD got two back in the bottom of the third on a single from Hunter Woodruff and a double from junior Alex Uy. After conceding one more in the fourth, the Tritons added five to take a 8-5 lead on the back of a pair of 2-RBI doubles from Woodruff and junior Joey Flores. Ray Estrada knocked in a run on a single, as well. The two teams traded a run each in the fifth. Jacob Springman would lock down his first save of the season in the seventh, allowing one run to come across in the inning. Senior Ezekiel Haenelt scored three times in this game and was one of six pitchers used in securing the game after Uresti’s early exit.
