UCSD Kicks Off February at the Virtual Stars Championships
Eight UCSD gymnasts took part in the Virtual Stars Competition. The format of this competition allowed for gymnasts from schools all over the country to compete against one another without having to leave their own training centers. All participating gymnasts submit their videos to Virtual Stars, the organization that processes the videos, and have their routines reviewed and ranked by judges.
Junior and Co-Captain Elaine Silverman performed solid routines on all women’s apparatuses (Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise) in the Women’s Level 9. Junior Linh-An Ho had a strong showing on Beam, competing Women’s Level 9. Junior Orianna Kou competed Bars in the Women’s Developmental Level, while Senior and Co-Captain Sophie Chamaa debuted a newly upgraded floor routine, in the Women’s Level 8. Juniors Kayla (Cheyenne) Oligario and Clare Haworth kicked of their season with routines on Vault, Bars, and Beam, and Bars & Beam, respectively, in the Women’s Level 7. Freshman Ryan Burgess competed Women’s Level 9 on Vault, Beam, and Floor, performing beautifully executed routines on all events. Sophomore Jeremy Gutierrez rounded out the squad by competing in the Men’s Level 9 on all apparatuses (Vault, Pommel Horse, Rings, High Bar, Parallel Bars, and Floor Exercise) and debuting a newly upgraded floor routine.
Because of the nature of the competition, scores for the gymnasts’ routines won’t be released until a few weeks. Nonetheless, all UCSD gymnasts did a great job debuting their new routines, and are looking forward to continuing the season at SDSU in March.
