Six UCSD gymnasts kicked off 2019 at the Winter Wonderland Meet, competing against host UCLA and USC.
Junior Alice Williams competed Vault, Bars, and Beam in the Women’s Developmental Level, which is designed for newcomers to the sport of gymnastics, earning a high of 8.800 out of 10.000 on the Balance Beam. Junior Allyson Osborn competed all four events (Vault, Bars, Beam, and Floor) in the Women’s Level 8, finishing 3rd on Vault with a solid score of 9.575 and 2nd on Floor with a score of 9.500. In the All-Around, which is the total score of all four events combined, Osborn earned a 36.675 to finish 3rd out of 9 competitors in the level. Senior and Women’s Co-Captain Sophie Chamaa also competed Vault, Bars, and Floor in the Women’s Level 8, earning a high of 9.000 on Floor. Junior and Women’s Co-Captain Elaine Silverman competed all events in the Women’s Level 9, the highest level in NAIGC, earning a booming 9.500 on Vault to garner a 1st place finish. Silverman also tied for first on the Uneven Bars with a score of 9.000, and finished 2nd in the All-Around with a total score of 35.850.
Freshman Ryan Burgess and Sophomore Jeremy Gutierrez both competed Vault, High Bar, and Floor Exercise in the Men’s Level 9 to start off their season. Men’s scoring unlike Women’s is comprised of a difficulty score, with a higher difficulty score corresponding to a skill of higher difficulty, in addition to the execution score (out of 10.000.) Burgess and Gutierrez went 1-2 on Vault scoring a 12.800 and 11.700, respectively. They both tied for 1st on the High Bar with a score of 9.500. On Floor, Burgess earned a 1st place finish with a solid score of 13.500, helping him finish in 1st place in the All-Around. Additionally, he competed Floor in the Women’s Level 8, performing a beautifully self-choreographed and executed floor routine, resulting in a 1st place finish with a score of 9.550.
All UCSD gymnasts did a great job this past weekend, and are looking forward to being joined by the rest of the team at the next meet of the season, the Virtual Stars Championships, in February.
