Scrum by the Sea

On November 10th & 11th the UCSD Women’s Rugby Team put on its 21st annual Scrum by the Sea tournament, this year welcoming eighteen teams from around California and Arizona. UCSD opened the tournament with the first game versus Arizona State: while the game was very physical, Arizona State prevailed with the win over UCSD (5-28). Closing out day one in the competitive bracket, Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Berkeley were in the lead each having two wins and no losses. While over on field two in the social bracket, day one closed out with a three way tie between Claremont, CSU Chico, and CSU Long Beach, each winning two games and having zero losses.

On Sunday, the games opened with the 4th and 5th standing teams CSU Northridge and Arizona State facing of in the competitive bracket, this match appeared to be quite evenly matched as neither team could get a strong lead on the other. The match concluded with Arizona State taking the win 12-5. Later in the day, Stanford suffered its first loss of the tournament against UC Santa Barbara with a score of 49-10. As the day progressed UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara continued to dominate their opposition, as they would eventually meet in the final game in the tournament. While the match was no doubt competitive UC Santa Barbara seemed to take advantage of UC Berkeley’s weaknesses and attack with a strong back line, ultimately giving them the upper hand as the lead the match 36-5.
