Sean Ryan Memorial Tournament (Saturday)
The UCSD’s Air Squids season started off with a bang this year. We arrived in Santa Cruz ready to see what our new recruits can do. We went into Sean Ryan ranked dead last, with nowhere to go but up. Our first game was against the fourth ranked Utah squad. Zion started off hot, quickly pulling to a 3-1 lead. But, we threw a zone look that proved to be too much for Zion. Our four-man cup broke them repeatedly and took half with the lead at 7-3, Air Squids. Zion gathered some of their composure until the game was 11-6, with us in the lead. However, with the game easily in our grasp, the whole team relaxed. It was then that Zion got four consecutive breaks. Fortunately, during that last point, hard cap went off and we snuck away with the win, 11-10. Our game against Chico had less scoring streaks. They broke us once early, but we returned the favor a few points later. We took half with the lead. The rest of the game continued to feature holds by both teams until finally, on our defensive point, one of our deep shots connected and we secured the only break by either team in the second half. The final score of the game was 7-6, Air Squids. Our last game of the day was against LPC. Even though they had less than fifteen players, their experienced throwers and receivers proved to be too much for our defenders. Even with adjustments, LPC’s deep shots continued to connect. While it is promising we did break them a couple of times, they consistently converted on our mistakes and pulled away with the win. This was the last game of the tournament due the wildfires in Chico affecting the air quality. Despite ending on a loss, the Air Squids’ first tournament has left the team hungry for more competition.
