San Diego City Tournament
The Tritons hosted the San Diego City Rugby Tournament at UCSD for 6 local teams to play against each other. The Tritons were in the first pool with SDSU B and PLNU, which meant they had to play against both of them in pool play. During the first game, the Tritons came out rushing against SDSU B and scored often in the first half. SDSU was only able to put one score over the Tritons, while the Tritons kept putting them down against SDSU B. The second half of the first game was similar to the first half. The Tritons finished the game over SDSU B with a large lead in points and they needed to do the same against PLNU.
The second game of the tournament against PLNU was a test for the Tritons. The first half of PLNU was a grind game between the Tritons and PLNU with a lot of back and forth and only one score to PLNU. The Tritons needed to bring it around in the second half to win their pool. The second half was another grind game between the two. The Tritons were unable to score until the very last second after blocking a kick and touching down the score to tie the game in the end between PLNU and the Tritons.
Since the Tritons scored the most against SDSU B, the Tritons were first in the pool and had to play against Mira Costa who was first in their pool of USD and Mira Mesa. After the test match between Santa Barbara City College and SDSU A, the Tritons played against Mira Costa for first place. The first half came out shaky for the Tritons as they couldn’t get a pattern going against Mira Costa and they ran in to score 3 times in the first half. The second half had the boys pushing through the fatigue for the day to put out 3 scores against Mira Costa. Unfortunately, the Tritons couldn’t win and lost to Mira Costa at 17-25, ending the tournament at 2nd place. The Tritons have a few more games before the season begins to work out their patter and prepare to win their league.
