Tritons Continue to Roll: Take 2 of 3 From UCLA
The Tritons traveled to Los Angeles over the weekend to take the Bruins on in a 3 game series. Junior, Ray Young took to the mound for the Tritons. After a scoreless first, the Tritons were able to jump on the Bruins, with doubles by Rocco Novello and Miguel Moreno, and put up a 5 spot in the top of the second to take a quick 5-0 lead. The Bruins fought back with a run of their own in the bottom half, 5-1 Tritons after the 2nd inning. Young, continued to pitch well holding the Bruins to 1 run through 4 innings, ran out of gas in the fifth. The Bruins were able to get to him for 2 runs to make it 5-3 when the Tritons made the call to the bullpen to bring in Freshman Austin Uresti to get them out of the jam. Uresti came in and stopped the rally, going 1 and 1/3 innings, giving up 0 runs. In the top of the seventh, the Tritons took a close game and blew it open with 4 runs, courtesy of hits by Rocco Novello and Kelvin Murillo, making it 9-3. Senior, David Gomez closed the game out with a quick inning and one strikeout. Final score of game 1: Tritons 9 - Bruins 3
The Tritons had another fast start in game 2, putting up 3 runs in the first 2 innings to give themselves a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the second. In the bottom half, starting pitcher Jacob Springman ran into trouble, giving up 3 runs giving the Bruins a 4-3 lead after the 2nd inning. Springman found his groove and was able to give the Tritons 3 solid innings before turning the ball over to Junior Ray Estrada, who went 2 and 2/3 innings of 1 run ball. David Gomez was able to get Estrada out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth, leaving the Tritons in striking distance at 5-3 heading into the last inning. However, the Triton's bats were silenced from the second inning on and were unable to score. The Tritons were handed their first loss of the year. Final score Tritons 3 - Bruins 5.
Game 3 was a rare night game that served as the series rubber match. Freshman Austin Uresti took to the mound and gave the Tritons another strong performance, going 3 innings and 0 earned runs. The Tritons bats were slowed again by Bruin pitching, and thanks to 3 errors in the bottom of the third, the Tritons trailed 3-0 after the 3rd inning. In the top of the fourth, the Tritons finally got the bats working and were able to get on the board. Bruins lead 3-1 after the 4th inning. Junior, Matt Hosino took the mound next for the Tritons, keeping them in the game with a strong outing; limiting the Bruins to 1 run through two innings. In the top of the sixth, the Tritons exploded for 5 runs to take the lead thanks to clutch hitting Junior Josh Fonseca with a pinch hit 2 RBI double and RBIs by Senior Ben Rogness and Zeke Haenelt, 6-3 Tritons. Junior Christian Powell relieved Hosino, struggling to find his command but working out of jams, before turning the ball over to Junior Miguel Moreno to close the game. After a Bruin 2 run rally in the bottom of the seventh, Moreno was able to escape a bases loaded jam and get the save. Final score Tritons 6 - Bruins 5.
The Tritons will travel next weekend to CSU Northridge to take on the Matador's in a 3 game series.
