Tritons Start Strong: Sweep Toreros in Doubleheader
This weekend the Tritons traveled to San Pasqual High School to play University of San Diego to open up the season.
The Triton offense got off to a slow start coming up empty in the first 3 innings of game 1, but were kept in the game due to a strong pitching performance by Junior, Christian Powell. Giving up 0 runs through 2 innings and striking out 2. After giving up a 3-run home run in the third inning to go down 3-0, the Tritons battled back in the fourth with a huge 3-run home run by Junior shortstop, Miguel Moreno, to even the scoring at 3. The game remained a close one throughout as the Tritons took the lead in the top of the sixth with another home run by Moreno, giving him 4 RBI'S on the day. This solo shot put the Tritons up 4-3. Walks really hurt the Tritons in the bottom half of the inning as the pitching staff walked 5 to give the Toreros a 5-4 lead heading into the last inning. Freshman Second Baseman, Kenta Okada made a phenomenal diving play to keep the score close at 5-4, giving the Tritons the chance and momentum to come back in the last inning. The Tritons were able to rally for a comeback victory, with a 7 run inning, thanks to a clutch 3 run home run by newcomer, Freshman Outfielder, Rocco Novello. Freshman Pitcher, Austin Uresti closed out the game with a solid first outing to secure the victory. Final Score of Game 1, Tritons 11-Toreros 6.
In game 2, the Tritons started many new players to show what they could contribute to the club, but it was veteran Senior, Seamus Beyerle who got the Tritons off to a great start with an RBI single in the top of the first to give them the 1-0 lead. That was all the offense Junior, Raymond Young, needed as he threw 2 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts. This game was a tight pitchers duel throughout as Senior, David Gomez also gave 2 strong innings of scoreless baseball and racked up 4 strikeouts. Novello hit his second home run of the day to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. The Tritons were able to take advantage of errors made by the Toreros in the top of the fifth by adding 3 runs to go up 5-0. The Toreros battled back by adding 4 runs over the next 2 innings but were unable to complete the comeback, leaving the tying run on base to end the game. Final Score of game 2, Tritons 5-Toreros 4.
