UCSD Shreds!

POSTED BY LIZ HENRY

Once again, the UCSD snowski team proved to be a competitive presence at this season's races. On the snowboarder’s side Irina Bataeva continued to impress as she placed second in Giant Slalom. On the Skier’s side Joe Breuer finished second in both Giant Slalom and Slalom, while first year team member Aly Kennedy finished second in Giant Slalom. Like Joe, she is a Junior Olympian and we’re stoked to have another boss skier on the team! We also had many more top ten finishers and two first time racers: Chris Johnson and Cat Ward! Congrats, you two, we hope you had fun!

We have another competition this weekend with a Slopestyle competition and a Rail Jam scheduled, but no alpine events, so we’ll hit the features hard and steezy so we get those style points. Until then, we’ll continue to pray for snow so we can have a boarder/skier cross event at least once this year.

UC San Diego on the Podium!

POSTED BY LIZ HENRY
During the second race of the Snowski and Snowboard season, all of the teams did fantastic in their races. On the Skier's side, Joe Breuer finished 1st in Giant slalom, and in his slalom race, battled back from a fall on his first run that put him in 13th place all the way back up to 3rd place overall. Joe's podium finishes helped the Team place second overall, finishing only behind USC in both races! On the Snowboarder's side Irina Bataeva was a standout in her race. She finished second in her Giant Slalom race which helped pull the Female snowboard Team into second place behind UC Santa Barbara. In the race this weekend, the team also had 14 different team members race for the first time! For some, their first run down the race course was also their first run down a black diamond! Huge congratulations to Andy Pabst and Cristy Barney for facing your fears and getting down the race course! Even with all of the new racer's there were ZERO disqualifications in the Snowboard Giant Slalom race from UC San Diego! This is a huge feat for new (and even experienced) racers, so congrats to all of you! Our next race is on January 27th-28th. In the meantime, we will be practicing so that our next race will go even better, and continue to pray for snow so that next in the next race, we can participate in Slopestyle, Rail Jam, and Boarder/Skier Cross instead of having them cancelled again!

Ski and Snowboard Team’s 1st Race of the 17/18 Season

POSTED BY LIZ HENRY
The first race for UCSD was a great success with many top 10 finishes from both the skiers and the snowboarders! Notable finishes came from Irina Bataeva with both a first place finish in the Rail Jam competition as well as a second place finish in Giant Slalom. Joe Breuer also placed third among a strong field of skiers in Giant Slalom. Overall, UCSD had a good showing for the first competition with many of our team competing for the first time! We look forward to a great season during the winter quarter and are praying for more snow so that our competitions don't get cancelled!

Dec 27-31 Snow and Ski

Mammoth Mt. was Lit   UC San Diego truly set the bar high in the first race of the season at Mammoth Mt. over Winter Break! Long time racer and mountain-lover Joseph Breuer killed the competition with 1st in Giant Slalom (GS) and Simone Klein, the team’s favorite med student, flew in with 2nd in GS, 3rd in Slalom and 4th in park - Holla! “Phenomenal form all the time, these two.” mentioned Team Captain Hakan Erol. The other captain KT Owens showed the rest how it’s done on a board with 2nd in park and 5th in GS in her first competition ever. The guys boarding know what’s up with keeping the pressure on the other schools and proved it when serial team member Nareg Ghazikhanian tore it up with 5th in GS and 8th in park, along with Jeff Lampert who slid in there with 6th in GS, and President Sparkles Hakan with 7th in GS. The team is lit to have had such a kickass race and expect more great times and even better snow with this “Century El Nino”.

Jan 9-10 Snow and Ski

POSTED BY MICHAEL ZHONG
Shredding the Fresh Pow   This season is turning out to be awesome so far for the Ski and Snowboard Team at UC San Diego! With 4-5 feet of fresh pow to shred and find in them trees, Race 2 of 5 turned out well for the team and especially for one of the best skiers on the team Joseph Breuer! He once again has slammed the rest with FIRST PLACE for the second race in a row in Giant Slalom (GS). Not going to lie, he’ll probably keep it up too. Second season team member, who recently returned from studying abroad in Chile, Kirstin Barnhart didn’t miss a beat, obviously, when she got 3rd in GS and Slalom. This was quite a monumental race for the league because for the first time in three years they brought back SKIER/BOARDER CROSS, sort of like motocross, and man was it a blast! Weaving their way through the brackets Hakan Erol placed 7th and Jeff Lampert in 8th out of 37 dudes. A solid finish for the weekend of festivities, and looking forward to racking up even more points and days on ze mountain.
