This past Saturday in the heat of winter in Tuscon, Arizona, the Western team competed in their last show of the season. In the morning, Elena Browne received 4th place in Intermediate II and Samantha Watts got 2nd place in Novice. In the afternoon, Elena Browne won 1st place and the visiting English rider Dani Sprouse won 4th place in Intermediate II; Samantha Watts won 1st place in Novice. For Yutong Qiu, our senior, this was her last show ever. It was a joy to see her grow over the course of the season. She will be greatly missed next year, but we all know she’s going to go on to accomplish great things. Congrats on a great season, everyone!
On the weekend of February 4th and 5th, the UC San Diego English Equestrian Team took a road trip to Arizona for another horse show. Despite being tired from the long drive, we always have the most fun going to Arizona every year and it turned out to be a nice team bonding trip! On Saturday, Becca Huntly-Playle placed 2nd in open flat. Aleena Karamally placed 3rd in intermediate flat. Arianna Gorman placed 4th and Alyssa Franklin received reserve, both in advanced walk, trot, and canter. On Sunday, Huntly-Playle placed 6th in open flat. Karamally placed 5th in intermediate flat. Jamie Lee placed 3rd in novice fences and received reserve in novice flat. Bahar Salehi placed 4th and Gorman received reserve, both in advanced walk, trot, and canter. Sasha Doval placed 2nd and Danielle Sprouse placed 3rd in beginning walk, trot, and canter. Overall we had a really good weekend and everyone did a great job!
On the weekend of December 3rd through 4th, (aka the weekend before finals!!) the English Equestrian team hosted a show at Galway Downs in Temecula. It was a very stressful weekend but a huge success for the team. We got reserve high point team on Saturday, the first team award the UC San Diego has received in two years!! We are so proud of everyone who showed and everyone who came to help us out, we could not have done it without you!
Becca Huntly-Playle placed 2nd in open fences on Saturday and reserve in open flat on Sunday. Aleena Karamally placed 5th in intermediate fences and 3rd in intermediate flat on Saturday, and 6th in intermediate flat on Sunday. Jamie Lee placed 3rd in both novice fences and flat on Saturday. Bahar Salehi placed 4th in advanced walk-trot-canter on Saturday. Madeline Haff was awarded reserve in advanced walk-trot-canter on Saturday. Sasha Doval placed third in beginning walk-trot-canter on Saturday. Dani Sprouse placed first in beginning walk-trot-canter on Sunday. Alyssa Franklin placed first in beginning walk-trot-canter on both Saturday and Sunday, which allowed her to point out of her division! She will be riding in advanced walk-trot-canter at future shows.
Regardless of the placings, everyone rode amazingly and we could not be more proud of our team!
On the weekend of November 11th through 12th, the UC San Diego Equestrian team headed east for the show in Norco. It was a tough one but its shows like these that challenge us as a team and bring us closer together. It's a good reminder to why we are doing this in the first place: horseback riding is what we all love and we have a great time doing it. Despite how we may do at a show, riding is what ultimately keeps us going and what we must focus in on.
Everybody managed to pull it together and we had a good show overall, with huge improvements for everyone on Sunday!
Becca Huntly-Playle placed second in open flat on Saturday, and fourth in open fences and reserve in open flat on Sunday. Aleena Karamally placed sixth in intermediate flat on Saturday, and fourth in intermediate flat on Sunday. Madeline Haff was awarded reserve in advanced walk-trot-canter on Saturday. Dani Sprouse was awarded reserve in beginning walk-trot-canter on Sunday. Alyssa Franklin placed third in beginning walk-trot-canter on Saturday. It was also her first time riding in this division! Sasha Doval placed second in beginning walk-trot-canter on Sunday.
We are very proud of everyone!
