3/1/26 - Coming Up Short: UCSD Loses to Cal Poly SLO

Coming off a win from last week against USD, the Tritons were excited to play Cal Poly SLO. There has always been a lingering tension between these teams. The Tritons beat Cal Poly SLO in the Aztec cup right at the end, so this game was going to be a battle. Although the Tritons were confident in their abilities, they lacked players and most of their team was injured. However, they still persevered and rose to the challenge.

The first half consisted of a lot of back and forth attacks between the two teams. Cal Poly SLO came out hard in the beginning of the match and put UC San Diego on their heels. But, the Tritons fought back and created chances throughout the half. Around the 35 minute mark, the Tritons received a free kick. UC San Diego set up a little trick play from the freekick that almost ended up in a goal. Lucas V crossed the ball toward the back post where Owen ran onto it and finished. Sadly, the goal was offside, but it was a clear example of the dominance of UCSD during the first half.

The second half was a dramatic shift from the first. Cal Poly SLO scored their three goals consecutively. Although Lucas V was able to hit a knuckleball banger from around 35 yards out, the Tritons were unable to comeback and win the game. It was a valiant attempt by the Tritons and instead of feeling down about the loss, they look forward to the game next weekend against San Diego State University to redeem themselves.
