2/8/26 - UCSD vs GCU: A Battle of Physicality and Grit
On Super Bowl Sunday, UCSD faced off against GCU in a hard-fought matchup at Warren Field for the last home game of the season. Despite the final score of 22–50, the Tritons showed resilience and determination from start to finish. GCU capitalized on early opportunities and maintained strong attacking pressure throughout the match, but UCSD answered back with grit, refusing to let the game slip away without a battle.
Opening the game with a bang, Darya Massih blew through the GCU defence into the try-zone only minutes after kickoff, the team awarded a penalty try after a high tackle from the bewildered defence. UCSD’s tries came from Rose Green in the 38th minute and Mia Taylor in the 73rd minute, with key conversions added by Nikole Kron. Stella Dorsey also slotted a penalty in the 22nd minute to keep momentum within reach. While GCU’s Angelique Schrock and Arianna Topping proved clinical in their finishing and conversions, the Tritons continued to push back defensively and offensively. Every phase was contested, and UCSD matched GCU’s physicality with relentless effort around the breakdown and in open play.
The defining moment came in the final quarter when UCSD crossed the try line, ending the match on a high note. That last-minute score was more than just points on the board — it was a statement of heart. Even in a tough loss, the team proved they would not give up, fighting until the final whistle. Finishing with that try boosted morale and reinforced the team’s belief in one another, setting the tone for growth and determination moving forward in the season.
