At the annual largest collegiate competition on the West Coast, UCSD’s Dancesport Team swept the floor with amazing placement in all categories.

In Dance by the Shore’s Latin Division, Toby Anderson placed 1st in Novice Paso, Gold Rumba, and Samba, 2nd in Novice and Gold Jive, 2nd in Gold Cha-Cha, and 3rd in Novice CSR (Cha-Cha/Samba/Rumba). Brandon Torres and Valeria (Yeya) Corona placed 1st in Gold Cha-Cha and Jive, and 2nd in Samba, Rumba, and Paso Doble, while also receiving 4th in Novice Latin. Alexander (Alex) Tahan and Cadie Sparks placed 2nd in all Silver dances, and 6th in Gold Jive, Samba, and 6th in Cha-Cha. Mars Bau and Julia Svajda completed first in all Silver Latin and 4th in all Gold Latin. Following closely in Silver Latin, with 5th in Cha-Cha and Rumba and 6th in Paso Doble, was Michaelangelo Sansano and Clarissa Hodges. Lyssa Lashus and Zhiru (Zerina) Liu placed 4th in Silver Rumba and Jive, along with 6th in Cha-Cha–they also won 1st in Bronze Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive, 2nd in Bronze Cha-Cha. Michelangelo and Clarissa received 1st in Bronze Cha-Cha, 2nd in Rumba, 3rd in Samba and Paso Doble, and 4th in Jive. Caitlyn (Cait) Smith and Naomika Nadkarni placed 5th in Bronze Rumba and Paso. Cait and Naomika placed 5th in Bronze Paso and Rumba; Cait placed 1st in Newcomer Jive, Samba, Cha-Cha, and Paso, and 2nd in Rumba; Cait and Julia placed 1st in all five categories of Rookie-Lead Latin. Alex and Ella Chen received 5th in Rookie-Follow Jive and placed as a finalist in Rumba.

A similarly large share of placements also continued into the day, with increased competition even between our own team members! Mars and Julia placed 4th in Gold Standard Waltz, while Alex and Cadie placed 2nd in Quickstep, 3rd in V.Waltz, 4th in Foxtrot, and 5th in Tango. In Silver, Mars and Julia placed 1st in Waltz, 2nd in V.Waltz and Quickstep, and 3rd in Tango and Foxtrot. Alex and Cadie placed 1st in Tango and Quickstep and 2nd in Waltz and Foxtrot. Michaelangelo and Yeya Corona placed 6th in Silver Waltz, 1st in Bronze Waltz, and 4th in Foxtrot. Cait and Ella placed 3rd in Newcomer Waltz, Tango, and Foxtrot, along with 4th in Quickstep. In the same category, Kaya Morales and Zerina placed 6th in Waltz. In Rookie-Lead Standard, Greg Peregrin and Cadie ended with 1st in Waltz, Tango, V.Waltz, and Foxtrot!

Following these results in the category of Smooth, Alex placed 2nd in Novice Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, and V.Waltz, while Cadie received 5th in Novice Viennese Waltz, and 6th in Waltz, Tango, and Foxtrot. Alex and Cadie placed 1st in Gold Waltz, Tango, V.Waltz, and 2nd in Foxtrot. Mars and Toby received 4th in Gold Waltz, Foxtrot, and V.Waltz, 6th in Tango, 1st in Silver Tango, 3rd in V.Waltz and Foxtrot, and 4th in Waltz. Michaelangelo and Julia placed 1st in Gold Foxtrot, 2nd in Waltz, 3rd in Tango, and 5th in V.Waltz. Clarissa and Greg placed 1st in Newcomer Waltz and 2nd in Foxtrot, 6th in Bronze Waltz; Clarissa and Michaelangelo placed 1st in Rookie-Follow Waltz and V.Waltz, along with 2nd in Tango and Foxtrot. In Rookie-Lead, Greg and Cadie received 1st in Waltz, and 2nd in both Tango and Foxtrot. Cait and Ella placed 3rd in Newcomer Waltz.

Moving onto the Rhythm dances, Cadie and Naomika placed 2nd in Gold, 4th in Swing, 5th in Rumba, and were finalists of Cha-Cha and Mambo; they also received 2nd in Silver Mambo, 4th in Swing, and 5th in both Cha-Cha and Rumba. Placing in Silver as well were Michelangelo and Julia with 1st in Silver Mambo, 2nd in Bolero, 3rd in Cha-Cha, and 5th in Swing; they received first place in all bronze categories! Mars and Lyssa placed 3rd in Silver Mambo, 6th in Rumba, and 7th in Bolero, while also coming in 2nd in Bronze Cha-Cha, Mambo, and Swing, as well as 3rd in Bolero and Rumba. In Bronze, Clarissa and Greg placed 4th in Rumba and 5th in Cha-Cha and Mambo, while also placing 1st in C/M Newcomer and 2nd in R/S. Also in Newcomer, Cait and Jenna received 2nd in B/C, and 3rd in M/S/R. Greg and Cadie won 1st in Mambo Rookie-Lead, along with 2nd in Cha-Cha and Rumba.

Dominating top placements as per usual, Toby won 1st in Advanced Nightclub 2-Step and 2nd in Hustle, and Brandon and Yeya placed 1st in Advanced Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata. Naomika and Cadie followed closely behind, with 2nd in Lindy Hop, 5th in Polka, and 6th in West Coast Swing. Nivedita Kasi and Cadie placed 5th in Advanced Argentine Tango. Clarissa and Greg ended with 5th in Beginner WCS. Kasi and Cait received 4th in 2-Step and 5th in Beginner Hustle, while Cait placed 4th in Beginner Merengue, 5th in Argentine Tango, and 6th in both Salsa and WCS.
