2/14/26 - UCSD 6, UCI 1: Shorthanded Tritons Take Home 3 Points
On Valentine’s Day weekend, UCSD Club Soccer traveled to Irvine to face the UCI Anteaters, just a fortnight after their previous encounter at the Triton Invitational. Despite a squad depleted by injury—leaving only ten fit players for the league clash—the Tritons displayed a tactical maturity that belied their numerical disadvantage.
The match commenced in unusual circumstances as the hosts also fielded ten, struggling with their own fitness concerns. UCSD capitalized immediately; a high press forced a turnover in the opposition half, allowing Dayne to produce a composed finish for the opener. The Tritons doubled down on their clinical edge in a sluggish first half, punctuated by a sublime near-post free kick from Kelan, and goals from Arush and Nick.
Following a halftime tactical shift, Brendan moved from between the sticks to lead the line for the second 45. Arush made it five soon into the half, connecting with Dayne’s inswinger. With the fatigued UCI side pinned in their own defensive third, the 60th minute produced a moment of pure individual brilliance.
Controlling a bouncing ball on his chest at the edge of the area, the once goalkeeper channeled his inner James Rodriguez, executing a magisterial 180-degree turn before unleashing a thunderous left-footed volley into the top corner. The strike, arguably the finest in the history of the program, left the opposition stunned and the Tritons in disbelief. Despite Irvine’s late consolation goal, UCSD secured a vital three points and a highlight reel that Brendan will have rewatched countless times.
