    1/30-2/1/26 - UCSD Triton Invitational

UCSD A kicked off the 2026 Triton Invitational in confident fashion, setting the tone early with a composed and dominant performance against CSUSM. From the opening whistle, the Tritons controlled possession and dictated the tempo, patiently working the ball side to side while probing for openings in CSUSM’s defensive shape. The breakthrough came from a clumsy challenge leading to a penalty. Cesar struck it home and proved clinical in front of goal. After waves of sustained pressure and several near misses, Cesar again capitalized on a well-worked attacking sequence to put UCSD ahead. Despite creating numerous chances throughout the half, the Tritons struggled to convert every opportunity, leaving the door slightly open for CSUSM to hang around. However, any doubt was erased when Cesar struck again, finishing off another attacking movement to secure his brace and a comfortable two-goal cushion. Defensively, UCSD remained organized and disciplined, limiting CSUSM to very few meaningful chances. The match ended as a statement performance — a 2–0 victory that reflected UCSD’s control, patience, and attacking quality to open the tournament strong.

With the withdrawal of CSUN, the Tritons had to make 2 different teams, UCSD A and UCSD B, with one playing in each bracket. UCSD B would end up going up against CSUF and UCI in the group stage. The first game against CSUF ends up with a great and reassuring 5-0 victory. After the end of first half, Tritons were up 2-0 but knew the game was not over yet and they had to stay focused all along the second half. With a strong defence and great communication, we are able to manage the game and increase the score during the second half. The midfield moved around a lot and we are able to pass the ball around pretty easily. After a great week of midterms, Tritons are locked in on their tournaments and want to win it.

UCSD A’s second group match against UCR proved to be a much tougher test, as fatigue and rising temperatures played a noticeable role in a tightly contested first half. Both teams traded spells of possession, but neither side was able to create clear-cut chances. The Tritons struggled to find their rhythm early, and the game went into halftime scoreless with momentum evenly split. The second half, however, told a completely different story. UCSD came out energized and pinned UCR deep in their own half, dictating play with sustained pressure and far more purposeful movement off the ball. Chance after chance began to pile up as the Tritons probed for the breakthrough, forcing UCR into desperate defending. The moment finally came in the 80th minute when a clumsy challenge inside the box handed UCSD a penalty. Kelan stepped up calmly and buried the spot kick, giving the Tritons a deserved 1–0 lead. From there, UCSD closed the match out professionally, maintaining control to secure a hard-earned win and valuable momentum heading into the semi-final.

On Saturday morning, a victory of the Tritons against UCI would assure them to head to the semi-finals the next day. UCI started the game with high pressure and control of the ball while Tritons took some time to get in the game correctly. After a couple of minutes and strong defence, Tritons manage to score and get ahead in the game. The Tritons started managing the game and were able to score more goals. UCI on the other hand did not give up and was able to score a goal on a defensive mistake due to high pressure. UCSD kept going and supported each other and instead of blaming each other, they supported each other and went to increase the score. The game ended with a victory of the Tritons 7-2 with some defensive mistakes but a lot of positive things.

UCSD A entered the semifinal against CSUF with confidence, and the match quickly turned into one-way traffic. From the start, the Tritons controlled possession and dictated the pace, calmly working the ball around while forcing CSUF to chase. The pressure paid off early, as UCSD found the net twice in the first half, capitalizing on sustained attacking movement and constant pressure in the final third. Despite creating what felt like countless scoring opportunities, the Tritons were content with their two-goal cushion heading into halftime. The defensive line remained largely untested, organized, and comfortable, ensuring another clean sheet was never in doubt. In the second half, UCSD added a third goal to effectively end the contest. CSUF’s response was frustration rather than resistance, as they began playing recklessly and simply launching the ball forward. UCSD responded the right way — by slowing the game down, maintaining possession, and suffocating any hope of a comeback. The 3–0 victory secured a spot in the final.

The Tritons are in the semi-finals against UCR. A very strong game from the entire team overall with a managed 3-0 win. We knew that to represent our school correctly we needed both teams in the final and this was passing by this team to win against UCR and head to the final. A strong start from the beginning with a goal scored pretty early in the first half. Throughout the game, UCR tries to come back with the score but UCSD’s strong defence and cohesion allows them to manage the game and score two more times during the game. The game seemed won but the Tritons remained disciplined and aimed for a shutout and closed out the game to enter the finals against UCSD A. Both teams displayed a dominant performance throughout the weekend and at the end of the day, UCSD A & B closed out the tournament with a combined 21 goals for and 2 against to wrap up Triton Invitational.
