1/24/26 - The Jeff Simon Memorial Regatta
Jeff Simon was a UCSD alum who passed away from cancer, and ever since, UCSD sailing has been working with his family to put on this regatta every year. It is a celebration of sailing, as well as a fundraiser for three nonprofits the team selects each year. This year, everyone who came also went home with the Jeff Simon Regatta 2026 t-shirt, designed by UCSD’s very own Diana Vins, and gifted by Simon's family.
This event was a great success, both administratively and competitively. This years' leadership had already put on one regatta; the Frosh/Soph Regatta, in the fall, so they were ready for this one. The race committee all showed up on time and Audra, a UCSD alum, was head of RC for the first time – and she did an excellent job!
Conditions Saturday were pretty perfect for many of the races. Decent 8-10 knots, consistent from the north-west, made for some competitive races. The wind died down twice during the day to about 2-3 knots, leaving racers slowly chugging around the race course.
Sunday was even better; to quote Triton sailor Tom Murphy, it was "about the best conditions you can ask for." Steady, strong wind all day, sunny skies: a perfect San Diego sailing experience.
UCSD’s racers sailed pretty well! For some who joined in the fall, this was just their first or second regatta. They got out there and sailed hard, showing what they have learned through all of their practices. There were 39 boats on the start line, making this hectic even for the most experienced sailors, but the extra challenge was fun!
