What’s The Deal With Memberships?

Return to Rec membership provides access to all facilities and is required for entry by all eligibility types including students, staff, and affiliates.

Membership Availability 

Undergrad and Graduate Students (Available for quarterly registration at no additional cost)

Staff/Faculty (Available for weekly, monthly, and quarterly registration with employee VC discount)

Alumni/Retirees/Affiliates (Available for weekly, monthly, and quarterly registration with affiliate discount)

Community Members (Return to Rec memberships are not currently available to community members)

  • Pre-Covid recurring monthly memberships will remain frozen until a return to normal operations 
    • Pre-paid members may request membership credit be applied to their Return membership 
  • Access will be limited by reservation times and building capacity 
  • Return to Rec Members must abide by all current county, campus, and Rec pandemic-related guidelines 
  • Masters workouts may be reserved via the Return to Masters membership (Available to all students, staff, and community members)

How Do The Reservations Work?

What to Expect 

  • Masks are always required, except when actively swimming 
  • Show up early to ensure you don’t miss any valuable workout time 
  • Check in opens 45 minutes prior to reservation time 
  • Bring a photo ID to confirm reservation 
  • Symptom screening will occur during check in, via the UCSD Green Thumb or live check 
  • Be ready to walk into your work out, and at the conclusion of your reservation walk out 
  • Locker rooms, showers, and common areas are closed; restrooms are available upon request 
  • Follow any newly implemented paths of travel and practice physical distancing 

Lap Swimming 

  • Reservation times are 50 minutes in length 
  • Reservations may be placed up to 3 days in advance 
  • Members are asked to limit themselves to no more than two reservations per day 

Fitness Gym/Cardio Zones 

  • Reservations are 45 minutes in length 
  • Reservations may be placed up to 3 days in advance 
  •  Members are asked to limit themselves to no more than two reservations per day 

Masters Workouts 

  • Reservations are 50 minutes in length 
  • Reservations may be placed up to 5 days in advance 
  • Members are asked to limit themselves to one reservation per day 

Walk-Ups 

  • Walk-ups are welcome with a valid Return membership and provided spaces are available 
  • Walk-up check in opens 15 minutes prior to the reservation start time 

Late/No Shows 

  • Members may check in late, but must leave at the scheduled end time 
  • Reservations unclaimed after 15 minutes will be released and considered a no-show 
  • No-show schedule of escalation 
    • 1st delinquency – Reminder of policies and clarification of their impacts 
    • 2nd delinquency – Further policy clarification and written warning issued 
    • 3rd delinquency – One week membership/reservation suspension 
    • 4th delinquency – Two week membership/reservation suspension 
    • 5th delinquency – Four week membership/reservation suspension 

*Reservations may be cancelled, sometimes on short notice, due to situations beyond our control including inclement weather & positive COVID tests; Recreation will strive to notify members in as timely a manner as possible

Is This Safe & Clean?

Member Health Responsibilities 

  • To protect others, everyone that enters the facility is required to wear a  face covering over their nose and mouth at all times except while swimming 
  • Everyone must maintain at least 6’ of physical distancing from other patrons at all times while in the facility 
  • Please refrain from handshakes, hugs, fist bumps, or physical contact of any kind 
  • Members should use hand sanitizer frequently while in the Rec facility 
  • Stay within your reserved zone 
  • Patrons must follow instructions regarding the closure of specific areas or equipment 
  • All visitors must follow all posted guidance, directions from Recreation staff, signage regarding entrance/egress and path of travel, and adhere to the Recreation Code of Conduct 

Entry Protocols  

  • Prior to entering our facility, members must be screened to be personally asymptomatic: no fever over 100.4, cough, shortness of breath, chills, sore throat, muscle aches or loss of taste/smell 
  • Members must have no one in household with symptoms  
  • Members must have not had unprotected contact with anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 for the last 7 days 
  • While queueing for entry and in common spaces, please maintain 6’ of physical distancing from others 
  • Handwashing/sanitizer is required upon entering the facility 
  • Entry with reservation via online or walkup registration only  
  • To facilitate contact tracing, phone and email contacts will be collected as part of the membership registration process 
  • For non-aquatic spaces, color-coded wristbands corresponding to reserved zones will be issued upon entry that must be worn while in the facility 
  • No reentry to facility after exit 
  • If you are symptomatic at check-in, or have tested positive for COVID-19, you will not be allowed into Rec facilities until you have been cleared by a medical provider and written documentation is provided to Recreation staff. 

Deep Cleaning & Enhanced Procedures 

  • Continuously scheduled disinfection and cleaning of high-touch surfaces throughout the facilities and equipment 
  • Facility hours and reservation times staggered to allow for deep cleaning 
  • Recreation Staff have received training on cleaning and disinfecting protocols and are provided with the appropriate kits and supplies 

Self-Cleaning Stations 

  • Readily available equipment for members to disinfectant equipment after use 
  • Hand-sanitizing stations are conveniently located throughout the building and fitness zones.  

Member Health Responsibilities - Schedule of Escalation 

  • 1st infraction – Reminder of policies and clarification of their impacts 
  • 2nd infraction – Further policy clarification and written warning issued 
  • 3rd infraction – One week membership/reservation suspension 
  • 4th infraction – Indefinite membership/reservation suspension 
    • Students will also face referral to the Office of Student Conduct
